Hi everyone,
Our 2026 AGM will be held on Saturday 7th of March at 8:00 am at Lake Burbury campground.
As usual we will have a raffle and some merchandise. The raffle will be drawn at 5:00 pm at the campground.
If you’re interested in being involved, then please volunteer because after 10 years, I am unable to continue running things and will be looking to step down and hand over all my responsibilities.
I have some suggestions for whoever takes over, including changing the structure of the committee to have Field Trip officers that are responsible for organising one trip each, instead of general committee members.
How to get there
Lake Burbury Camping Ground is approximately 20 minutes east of Queenstown on the Lyell Hwy, on the north side of the road. It is approximately 3 1/2 hours drive from both Hobart and Launceston, and it has barbecues and toilets.
Please do not pay for camping individually as the association will has an arrangement to pay for camping on the Friday and Saturday nights. Monday is a public holiday (8-hour day), but if you want to stay Sunday night then please do see the caretaker for payment for any extra nights.
I am volunteering to take people to look for Darwin Glass near the Mt McCall track on Sunday. You can find more information in the topic of our last trip there. There are also a few gold locations nearby, such as Newall Creek.
Gear
You can find small pieces laying on the surface of some of the roads in the area, but we will be heading to a spot to dig in older gravels. A pick, long-handled shovel and large spray bottle will be handy. A backpack sprayer if you have access to one is great for this.
There is no water in the area, and the gravel is covered in mud, so spraying water on the dug material makes spotting the glass much easier. Otherwise you’ll be trying to speck in stuff others have dug that has been rained-on since, and there is usually quite a bit of it sitting around.
