Coin find over 140 coins

On a recent trip to beauty point kristina and i detected the beach in front of the fish and chip shop, almost all the way up the southern end , we found over 140 pre war age coins with lots of signals still to be had , so i am sure there are more there to find if anyone wants to check it out ,

I wonder if someone threw them out there fairly recently, because I lived in Beauty Point about 6 years ago and detected that beach a few times with an equinox, and while I don’t claim to get everything I don’t reckon I would have missed all those.

Maybe , but some are very water worn and appear to have been there a long time , i have seen others detecting down there and they seem to stop just before the spot

These coins all appear to be international. Maybe from before WW2? The Nazi-era 1938 coin is interesting and also the Palestinian coin. This coin pre-dates modern Israel (1947).

I came across this gun in City Park Launceston that was made by a Russian Czar and captured during the Crimean War 1854-56. The Crimean Peninsula is still disputed with the main bridge regularly blown-up by Ukraine.

It’s funny this gun is even in Launceston.
It’s at the same site as the first Government House in Tasmania but I don’t think you would last long detecting there
Due to health reasons I no longer do PMAT field days so I won’t be around much.

Hey Karl,
Some interesting observations!
Sorry to hear of health issues: I hope to catch up with you somewhere down the track, be it Tassie or mainland.
take care,
AG

Hey Karl,
Was just thinking, i wondered if there might have been a internment camp in the area, for the 2nd WW, some had there own monetary system and coins. That might help explain the selection and dates of the coins. My parents grew up in the area and i sure they would have known, but sadly they both have passed now.. but i will see what i can find out..

Hi Tassybatman,
That’s a good point. Tasmania’s quota, increasing to 950 in May 1944, was distributed among six centres: Latrobe, Redpa, Devonport, Burnie, Launceston and Brighton.

I used to see a guy detecting at low tide around the old ‘divo’ (now gone) at Beauty Point but I thought he was finding Aussie coins and maybe a ring. He was there quite a bit so must have been finding something. Dale and kristina obviously found a whole coin collection. How it got there may always be a mystery. It could have been collected by an ex-serviceman or merchant seaman.

Good on them for finding it  Don’t try too hard to clean-up the old coins.
