Galena finds on the north west

Found a nice bag full of what believe is Galena at a old mine site.. Have not found the adit that it come from but can’t be to far from it if I’m finding that in a pile of rock and dirt. Might have to get the gear up to smelt it down at some point see what I can get from it… as from what I have seen on information on the place they did okay for lead Silver and Gold in some places

Yep, certainly looks like galena!

Often hangs out with sphalerite (ZnS) which is usually a dark brown, sometimes a bit honey-coloured.

A lot of the old mines didn’t want the zinc, so good specimens end up on mullock heaps.

Be careful smelting the galena: lead poisoning is not good! :grimacing:

cheers

Yeah I think they had a mine for that in that location as well with the old copper deposit from time to time would love to pull some of them out of a wall or muck pile … will have to jump on mrt and read up on a couple of pdf’s I downloaded on the location…… funny what you find when your about to give up on a location for the day stop for a smoke kick a pile of rocks and that’s under the leafs and dirt…. But yeah will be smart when roasting and smelting lead down mostly after the little bit of silver and gold it has trapped all through it…. Golds easy to spot for myself…. Thanks for the information drystone
