My Nan told us a story of how during the polio outbreak in Launceston in the 1930’s she was sent away to the country to stay with family for a while, and they went up to Ringarooma where her uncles were mining tin. She said they never married, had long beards and didn’t say much. She remembered a long walk through the bush to go and see them at the mine. We have a photo of them standing by a head frame and its exactly like that, ragged looking men with long beards wearing dirty suits.
