Weldborough Field Trip Saturday 2 May 2026

Our next field trip will be to Weldborough on Saturday 2 May 2026 9:00 am - 5:00 pm.

The meeting place will be at the Weldborough Hotel beer garden at 9:00 am Saturday 2 May. As usual, there is no cost for the trip, but it is only open to members. If you’re interested in joining PMAT, you’re more than welcome to come along and join up on the day.

The Weld River has produced good sapphires and topaz, as well as occasional chrysoberyl over the years, and given recent rainfall should be a good place to spend the day. Other nearby options include Main Creek, Black Creek and the Frome River.

Getting there

Weldborough in on the Tasman Highway between Scottsdale and St Helens. The Weld River Fossicking Area is in Moorina, approximately 15 minutes from Derby and 1 hr from St Helens. Drive into Frome Road opposite the Moorina Golf Club, until you get to the bridge over the Weld River in a few hundred meters. The fossicking area extends upstream a few km from the bridge to the first gorge.

Where to stay

There is a small camping area at the Weld River Fossicking Area, but the word is that squatters have set up permanent camps in there.

There is a council-run caravan park in Branxholm.

There is free camping at the back of the Weldborough Hotel, with toilet facilities and paid ($2) showers. The Hotel is expecting us so this should be your first port of call for camping. There is accommodation and meals. We would encourage you to book for a meal at the hotel in order to support them, as they provide quality free camping. If you would like to have dinner there, it would be wise to book early.

What to bring

The water may well have started to get noticeably colder, so it would be good to bring either waders or a wetsuit in order to stay warm for extended periods in the water. For fossicking for gemstones, your main tools will be a long-handled shovel and a pair of gem sieves. Other useful bits of gear include panning dishes, scoops, and containers for your gemstones.

Nowadays using a small river sluice is allowed, and Black Creek has a small amount of gold in it, so if you’re planning to head out there, bring your pan or sluice.

Fossicking options

There will likely be people heading to other locations either on the Saturday, or those who stay overnight, on the Sunday. Ask around if you’re keen on heading out somewhere else and you’re not sure where.

Trip rules

For safety reasons there will be a register on site. Those heading out for the day will be asked to sign out, and indicate where (generally) they headed to. Please sign in again when they return safely so we know not to come looking for you.

If you have any questions, this is the best place to ask!

I went to the weld river access road with the camps last week and only saw some signs of squatters but no one to be seen, looks like they may have been run out of home!

Either way, the track all the way down the road is accessible again so you can avoid where they were camping if they do return.

Thanks for the info Ozjackaroo
Will you be joining us for the field trip?

I am hoping so, still very new to fossicking and have been struggling finding locations with anything above flakes.
Now that I have my prospecting license ill be able to go around to more obscure places and explore, so if I cant make the Saturday ill see our admin on the Friday before!

A timely reminder that if you wish to fossick outside the designated public fossicking area (Weld River fossicking area | Mineral Resources Tasmania)
you will need a current Tasmanian Prospecting License Apply for a prospecting licence | Service Tasmania

Thanks everyone who came, it was a surprisingly warm day and the river level was crazy low. I think everyone managed to find some sapphires, though nothing earth-shattering.

Here are some of my photos:

Had a good weekend away with the club looking for sapphires was the first time for me, was good to get taught how to do pan and be able to get the sapphires in middle of the pan.

Had a good turn out from club members with a couple of new members joining as well. We had a very nice meal at the pub after the day of panning

The weather gods were on our side last weekend as we searched for the elusive blue rocks

We had a good turnout of members both old and new and was nice for me to finally learn how to go about gem hunting

We all managed a few stones although they were of the small variety
We all enjoyed a fantastic meal at the weldborough hotel Saturday evening

Thank you to Andrew Garner for sharing a few fossicking spots

A big thank you to blake and Scott for helping me organise the weekend and for the way you have both taken on your new roles within the club
Also a big thank you to Miguel for helping us get the behind the scenes running of the club in a good place now

Once we have a plan of the next trip after winter we will let everyone know so you can put it in your diary
Cheers
