Sabbath Creek 8-9 Nov 2025

Hi everyone,

Our next trip will be to Sabath Creek on the weekend of the 8th and 9th of November, to coincide with the Zeehan Gem Show. This field trip is free for members, but you have to be a PMAT member to attend.

Sabbath Creek, also known as Sunday Creek, was worked for gold starting at the time of the Corinna gold rush in 1879/1880. The original party working there was made up of T.B. Moore and George and Owen Meredith, and worked alluvial gold shedding off tertiary gravel beds and concentrated in creeks that drain the area.

The Sabbath Creek gold is very flat, almost like rice flakes, and relatively easy to detect. Andrew Homan @ajhoman71 has an exploration licence over the area and is happy to give us permission to prospect there, but please report any finds to him at the end of the day.

There are two areas on Sabbath Creek worth spending time on, (A) is the site of the original workings, and (B) around the junction of two creeks has produced a number of small nuggets over the years.

Camping is at (C), just down the road a bit towards Corinna. There will be signs and/or long streamers of flagging tape at the camping area and the main turn into the track to the working area.

There is no water at the camp, so please bring your own. We will have a toilet.

There is detectable gold in the creeks, but small sluices or pans are also worth using, though there may not be much water flow, depending on recent rain.

For more info, feel free to ask questions here, or see our post about our last trip there in 2022.

Hi all..this is just a thought at this stage..would there be any interest if I organised a helicopter to do trips at corrinna ..to fly over areas down that way..no idea on cost or logistics..at this stage..but will find out more..any thoughts

Sounds great, but cost would be a big factor. Pity there’s nowhere to land near the remote gold areas down that way. I’d definitely be up for getting dropped off at a remote gold bearing creek and picked up 5 hours later!

Had a bad day on saturday at Parrawee ck while panning. A fine chap in a metalic blue nissan or toyota 2wd single cab flat tray 10 to 20 years old decided he needed my Stihl chainsaw from the back of my car. I didnt hear him stop as the creek was too noisey but I saw him 3 minutes later drive off from 50 mt away. It often concerns me leaving my vehicle remote in the bush with these crimials around. Time to use a camera!

Very disappointing johno

A sad day when you can’t leave your Ute for a while while you have a pan in the creek

On the helicopter subject it might be a fireside topic for next year..$ $2000 an hr .they based at latrobe an cradle mt .they charge only for fly time from there to wherever..if we can find a spot for them to land an work from that doing trips it cheaper etc ie browns Plains or reece dam ..chopper fits 3 plus pilot ..ahh the PROBLEM is.. he needs permission from whoever own controls the ground..parks won’t give permission BUT if its under a EL or mine or foresty or private they can approve etc etc.. personally luv to fly over savage batty bend Meredith Lucy .Frenchman’s workings in a loop ??? He can drop us off if we get permission..all just a idea ..so 10 people put in a $1000 each $10000 5hrs fly time etc etc something to talk abo

Another great trip down to Sabbath. Big thanks to Andrew for having us on the lease and to everyone who helped organise. Even with the inclement weather there was a great turnout and the morale remained high. Its always a great experience catching up, theres a heap of knowledge floating around, and some great stories and advice.

Had a fantastic weekend. Big thanks to Andrew Homan for letting us on his lease. Great to find a bit of colour and also get a good workout up and down the track.
Another great PMAT outing with a bunch of fun people.
Can someone please send me Lindsay Garrity’s number? He mentioned he had some coils for sale.

Thanks for a great weekend prospecting on Sabbath creek we all had a great time and learnt a lot, even managed to find a few small pieces of gold. Looking forward to joining the group on another trip soon. Andrew, Sharon and Tobias

Most of it came from one large, deep crevice, but a few further upstream that have definitely been cleaned out before have replenished over winter and were worth another go.
